AP Art and Design is divided into three distinct pathways: 2-D Art and Design, 3-D Art and Design, and Drawing. In this course, students create a portfolio of college-level work and submit it for evaluation by the College Board. There is no paper-and-pencil exam. The submission explores three main categories: Investigation, Experimentation, and Communication, and is graded on two components: Sustained Investigation, which accounts for 60% of the total score and should demonstrate an inquiry-based body of related works exploring materials, processes, and ideas; and Selected Works, worth 40%, featuring five artworks that best demonstrate skillful synthesis of these elements. Students should be prepared for a course that requires significant research, citation, and the production of a substantial volume of work. If independent idea generation and written justification of artistic choices are not appealing, this may not be the right fit.
Principles of Design Fine Arts | Grades 10–12 | Prerequisite: None
This course provides a foundational introduction to visual design, covering core principles such as composition, color theory, typography, layout, and photography. Students will build their design skills progressively through a series of guided exercises and projects, developing both a technical vocabulary and a practical eye for effective visual communication. The course culminates in a capstone project: applying these principles to the creation of different projects, including the school yearbook, giving students the opportunity to put their developed skill set to work on a real, published piece of design.
