Beyond the Classroom
Hyde's location in the heart of Mid-Coast Maine places students within reach of one of New England's most vibrant cultural and recreational landscapes. On weekends, students explore the charming shops, restaurants, and waterfront of downtown Bath, catch live music at local venues, or head to nearby Brunswick for a film, a bookstore afternoon, or a meal at one of the region's beloved farm-to-table restaurants. Whether students are browsing the Maine Maritime Museum, attending a community theater production, or simply taking in the salt air along the Kennebec River, life beyond the classroom in Bath offers its own kind of education.
A short drive up the coast opens up even more. Discovery Groups and classes make the trip to Portland, Maine's thriving arts and culinary capital, to catch performances, explore the Portland Museum of Art, or attend concerts and shows in the Old Port. For bigger adventures, students have traveled to Boston to visit the Seaport or Faneuil Hall, and visited Hyde alumni in New York City to shadow professionals in finance on Wall Street. These excursions bring Hyde's character-education mission into the real world, giving students a chance to practice independence, initiative, and genuine curiosity outside the comfort of campus.
Closer to home, weekends bring student- organized film nights, open mic gatherings, pick- up sports on the quad, and trips to nearby Freeport for shopping and a stop at the flagship L.L. Bean. Students also enjoy seasonal favorites like apple picking in the fall, ice skating in winter, and beach days at Popham or Reid State Park as spring arrives. At Hyde, the entire state of Maine becomes an extension of campus, a place where students build friendships, discover passions, and learn to find adventure wherever they are.
