AP Art and Design is divided into three distinct pathways: 2-D Art and Design, 3-D Art and Design, and Drawing. In this course, students create a portfolio of college-level work and submit it for evaluation by the College Board. There is no paper-and-pencil exam. The submission explores three main categories: Investigation, Experimentation, and Communication, and is graded on two components: Sustained Investigation, which accounts for 60% of the total score and should demonstrate an inquiry-based body of related works exploring materials, processes, and ideas; and Selected Works, worth 40%, featuring five artworks that best demonstrate skillful synthesis of these elements. Students should be prepared for a course that requires significant research, citation, and the production of a substantial volume of work. If independent idea generation and written justification of artistic choices are not appealing, this may not be the right fit. AP Art History History / Social Sciences / Art | Grades 11–12 | AP Course | Prerequisite: none, preferred Advanced Placement experience in Arts or History AP Art History welcomes students into the global art world through the study of art, artists, art- making, and the many ways people respond to and interpret works of art. Using the AP Art History course structure, students investigate 250 works of art representing diverse artistic traditions from prehistory to the present. Through research, discussion, reading, writing, and close observation, students develop an in-depth understanding of art history from a global perspective, learning and applying skills of visual, contextual, and comparative analysis to engage with a variety of art forms, understand individual works, and recognize meaningful interconnections across history. The course emphasizes critical thinking, evidence-based interpretation, and full preparation for the AP Art History exam.
