Ceramics Fine Arts | Grades 9–12 | Elective
Ceramics introduces students to a variety of clay-based art forms, covering hand-building techniques, including slab building, coil building, and joining, as well as traditional wheel throwing. Students learn each method before settling into a chosen approach to develop a coherent body of work; the number of pieces and the complexity required will reflect the method selected. Students are also taught how to care for the ceramic studio, including keeping the space clean and tools properly maintained, and will learn how to glaze and decorate their finished pieces. Small-scale sculptural work may also be explored. Homework is minimal, consisting primarily of documenting work and occasional video tutorials; no prior experience is necessary.
Independent Study in Art Fine Arts | Grades 11–12 | Elective | Prerequisites: Portfolio approval and teacher consent. Limited to 3 students per year. Independent Study in Art is designed for students who have a strong command of basic artistic concepts and are ready to pursue sustained, self-directed exploration of their own creative questions. Similar in spirit to AP Art, students develop a central question or idea to investigate across the year — one that may evolve and shift as their work progresses. The course is student- led, with regularly scheduled check-ins with the teacher to discuss work in progress, reflect on ideas, and share completed pieces. Independent study may be undertaken in any art form for which the school has materials. Enrollment is limited to three students per year, and all applicants must submit a portfolio for approval by the art teacher prior to registration.
