Sound Production & Engineering Fine Arts | Grades 9–12 | Elective
Sound Production & Engineering explores the fundamentals of music, sound production, and live event engineering. The course opens with a focus on the technical side of sound: students learn to operate soundboards, distinguish between microphone types, and set up and run equipment for live performances — skills they apply directly to school events throughout the year. The course then moves into music production, covering basic Western music theory alongside industry-standard programs such as Pro Tools and FL Studio, with a dedicated unit on DJing. The year culminates in the assembly of a digital portfolio that documents each student’s growth as a producer and engineer. Throughout, students gain insight into the professional lives of working artists and musicians through field trips and guest speakers.
Introduction to Art Fine Arts | Grades 9–12 | Elective
Intro to Art develops foundational skills in drawing, painting, and visual thinking while giving students the freedom to create work that reflects their own interests and ideas. The first half of the course follows a structured format: students begin by hand-binding a custom sketchbook that they will use throughout the year, then explore the elements and principles of design, drawing techniques including continuous line, blind contour, and gesture, and an introduction to painting and color mixing using the primary colors. The second half of the year shifts to an Open Studio model, in which students receive a brief Monday demonstration of a new art practice and then spend Tuesday through Friday making art of their own choosing. This format instills the habits of a working artist: managing time, generating ideas, and maintaining sustained focus. Students complete four projects accompanied by written reflections on their creative process, with most work completed in the studio and weekly homework assigned in the sketchbook.
Advanced Art Fine Arts | Grades 10–12 | Elective | Prerequisite: Introduction to Art
Advanced Art runs alongside Introduction to Art in a shared studio environment, but students in this course are further challenged and benefit from more individualized instruction and one- on-one feedback from the teacher. The first half of the course revisits and deepens foundational skills in drawing and painting, with an emphasis on demonstrating a more sophisticated command of the elements and principles of design. The second half of the year shifts to Open Studio format, where students pursue self-directed work while engaging in regular check-ins and critiques. Students complete five projects accompanied by written reflections, with both in-studio work and bi-weekly homework assignments in the sketchbook and on Blackbaud.
