Introduction to Music Fine Arts | Grades 9–12 | Elective
Introduction to Music explores various aspects of music and music-making, beginning with the fundamentals of Western music theory before introducing students to the basics of guitar, piano, or drums and percussion. In the winter, the class examines music traditions and genres from around the world, including India, Sudan, Brazil, and Spain, with a dedicated unit on Afro- Cuban music and traditional culture. The course concludes with an instrument-making project that brings together art, music, and engineering. Students also benefit from visits by local artists and field trips to studios and exhibitions, including a year-end trip to the Bob Crewe Program in Art and Music at the Maine College of Art and Design in Portland.
Music Performance Fine Arts | Grades 9–12 | Elective | Prerequisite: Introduction to Music, Prior instrumental experience Music Performance focuses exclusively on the art of performing for both recorded and live audiences, and is designed for students who already play an instrument and wish to develop their performance skills. Students begin the year by planning which community meetings they will perform in and preparing for Fall and Spring Family Weekend performances. The course covers use of the theater’s PA system, including microphones, lights, and speakers, as well as documentation of their work. In the winter, students perform at the Patten Public Library in Bath and begin planning open mics. The year ends with a final community performance and a portfolio of performances completed throughout the year, supported by ongoing visits from local artists and field trips to studios, exhibitions, and the Bob Crewe Program at the Maine College of Art and Design.
