Introduction to Astronomy Science | Grades 9–12 | Elective

Astronomy explores the structure and evolution of the universe, from Earth’s place in the solar system to the largest known cosmic structures. Students begin by studying the Earth, Moon, planets, and other bodies that orbit the Sun, while also examining the history and development of space exploration. The course then expands outward through the study of stars and their life cycles, galaxies, exoplanets, and the large-scale organization of the universe, including filaments and superclusters. Throughout the course, students develop observational and analytical skills through the study of constellations and the night sky. Particular emphasis is placed on Northern Hemisphere constellations given Maine’s geographic location, while Southern Hemisphere constellations are also introduced. Weather permitting, students participate in monthly stargazing sessions to observe and record visible celestial phenomena such as planets, meteor showers, and seasonal constellations. The course also includes field experiences at regional astronomy centers and planetariums, including the Southworth Planetarium and the Versant Power Astronomy Center. By the end of the course, students should be able to identify major Northern Hemisphere constellations, recognize the planets and principal bodies of the solar system, explain the life cycle of stars, and describe humanity’s place within the Milky Way galaxy and the broader universe.
