Introduction to Marine Science Science | Grades 11–12 | Elective | Prerequisites: Biology and Chemistry
Hyde School’s Marine Science course is a hands-on, field-based life and ecological sciences course that explores the connections between humans and the marine world through real experiences along the Atlantic Ocean coastline and the Kennebec River. Students work alongside local experts and organizations, including Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, Lady Oyster, and local lobstermen and fishermen, to investigate marine ecosystems, species diversity, ocean habitats, and coastal resources. Through fieldwork, discussions, and collaborative projects, students study topics such as marine plants and animals, oceanography, fisheries, overfishing, ocean pollution, acidification, seabirds, and marine conservation. This course emphasizes curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and active participation as students develop a deeper understanding of how people are connected to and responsible for protecting our oceans and coastal environments.
