Introductions & Group Challenges

Hyde’s Summer Leadership Challenge begins with the Hyde “Introduction.” On the first night, all students, student leaders, and faculty members gather to introduce themselves to the community as a way to get to know each other. Introductions are the first opportunity students have to explore their public speaking confidence and take a step of courage. Group Challenges are a hallmark of the Hyde summer experience. Ranging from low ropes course activities to teamwork games, students’ problem solving skills are put to the test. These challenges are a chance for students to get to know one another, create group synergy, and build on leadership skills.

Student Leaders

At Hyde School, students have leadership opportuities all year round. Over the summer, selected students return to campus as Student Leaders. These students serve as mentors to new students and have the opportunity to build leadership skills.

Ropes Course & Camping Trip

Hiking the Trails of Maine Summer Leadership Challenge would not be complete without the day hike to the top of Mount Battie in Camden Hills State Park. Students spend the day together hiking the beautiful trails on the midcoast of Maine. The day hike pro- vides them the chance to challenge themselves physically and get to know their peers.

Hyde School’s Ropes Course is a combination of both high and low elements. The course is designed to challenge students to test their limits and tackle challenges outside of their comfort zone. These activites help students develop communication and problem solving skills, while having fun and supporting each other.

The Regatta: An Annual Tradi tion

A signature component of Hyde’s Summer Leadership Challenge is the annual Discovery Group camping trip. Each group embarks on a three-day outdoor adventure at Hyde’s Lennox Outdoor Leadership Center located in Eustis, Maine. Students learn not only about camping, canoeing, and hiking, but they also bond with each other as they learn and grow as a team.

Academics & Discovery Groups Throughout the summer, students are engaged in our Curiosity Curriculum which provide the opportunity to enhance their problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills. The curriculum focuses on three content areas – history; reading, writing, and public speaking; and Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematics (STEAM).

Students explore Maine’s rich history while learning poetry, writing and presenting personal narratives, and work as a team building boats to race in the annual Hyde Regatta. Academics at Summer Leadership Challenge are designed to teach students to tap into their curiosity, critical thinking skills, and creative abilities.

In Your Community Character Matters

At Hyde School, character is not an addition to the curriculum, it is the foundation of the curriculum. www.hyde.edu/character

Rafting, Sea Kayaking and Paddleboarding

Discovery Groups & Family Weekend

Taking advantage of all the natural beauty Maine has to offer includes whitewater rafting on the mighty Kennebec River in Northern Maine. The trip cascades through the Kennebec Gorge on class four rapids with an experienced guide. The day ends with a fireside lunch and slide show recapping the exciting day.

Students are assigned to Discovery Groups which are like an on-campus “family.” Led by faculty members, the Discovery Group engages in team building activities, self-awareness exercises, and social functions. The groups are designed to help students develop meaningful relationships with both their peers and adults and encourage personal growth.

Summer Leadership Challenge culminates with Family Weekend where the entire community gathers to celebrate the steps students have taken to embrace their leadership, reflect on their strengths and challenges, and take hold of their personal growth. The curriculum focuses on the family and activities include family seminars, athletic events, and a performing arts show.

Hyde partners with Seaspray Kayaking for a day of sea kayaking and paddleboarding on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Sea kayakers get stroke lessons and instructions on performing a wet exit, while the paddleboarders learn balance and stroke techniques. The students travel around the bay to watch the local wildlife and have fun in the water.
