This advanced course is equivalent to an intermediate college-level course in Spanish. Students cultivate their understanding of Spanish language and culture by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in real-life situations as they explore concepts related to family and communities, personal and public identities, beauty and aesthetics, science and technology, contemporary life, and global challenges. The course prepares students for the AP Spanish Language and Culture examination and for confident, authentic engagement in the Spanish- speaking world.
Mandarin 1 Foreign Languages | Grades 9–11
Mandarin 2 Foreign Languages | Grades 10–12 | Prerequisite: Mandarin 1
Mandarin 1 is an introductory course in Mandarin Chinese, developing foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing — including Chinese pronunciation (pinyin) and characters. Using Integrated Chinese Level 1, the course covers topics such as greetings, family, dates and time, hobbies, visiting friends, making appointments, school life, shopping, and transportation. Students learn to handle everyday situations and explain their lives, families, interests, and pastimes in Mandarin Chinese, while developing an appreciation for Chinese customs, traditions, and history through a structured and immersive approach.
Building on the vocabulary, grammar, and cultural awareness developed in Mandarin 1, this course allows students to engage in more advanced and rigorous study of the Mandarin language. Students continue to develop all four language skills — listening, speaking, reading, and writing — at a higher level of complexity, deepening their ability to communicate about a wider range of topics and contexts in Chinese.
Advanced Mandarin Foreign Languages | Grades 11–12 | Elective | Prerequisite: Mandarin 2
Advanced Mandarin is designed for students who have completed Mandarin 2 and are ready to pursue genuine proficiency in the language. Delivered in a tutorial format, the course creates the kind of sustained, one-on-one dialogue that accelerates spoken fluency. Students engage directly and regularly with the teacher in conversation, building the confidence, spontaneity, and precision that real communicative ability requires. Alongside this conversational emphasis, students develop their literacy through engagement with authentic written materials: news articles, essays, and selected literary texts that deepen both reading comprehension and cultural knowledge. Students who complete Advanced Mandarin leave not just able to speak Mandarin, but able to read and engage with the Chinese- speaking world on its own terms, a foundation that translates directly into college-level language study and beyond.
